Re’Naijah Ford: Beautifully Bold Leadership at 21

At just 21 years old, Renaijah Ford stepped into a space where many people told her she was “too young” to

belong. She ran for Town Council in Capitol Heights not because it was easy, but because she believed her community deserved to hear the voices of young people too.

And while the election may be over, her story is only beginning.

Renaijah’s journey into leadership started long before campaign flyers, speeches, or knocking on doors. As a former mentee of Beautiful As I Am, she learned early on that confidence is not about fitting into someone else’s image of leadership. It is about embracing who you are fully and unapologetically.

Being a mentee in BAIA was where the seeds of my confidence were first planted,” she shared. “It was the space that taught me that my creativity and my perspective weren't just valid. They were powerful.”

That confidence became the foundation of her campaign.

Growing up as a Girl Scout taught Renaijah that leadership is not defined by age, but by courage, character, and the willingness to speak up for others. Those lessons stayed with her as she entered rooms where she was often the youngest person present.

“There were definitely moments where people looked at my age before they heard my ideas,” she reflected. “But I stopped seeing my age as a hurdle and started seeing it as my superpower.”

Even without winning the election, Renaijah’s impact was undeniable. Ninety four neighbors cast their vote believing in her vision for a more inclusive and youth centered community. To her, those votes represented something much bigger than numbers.

“They represented people who believed a 21 year old deserved a seat at the table,” she said. “This campaign was never just about a position. It was about showing young people that our voices belong in these spaces too.”

Throughout her campaign, one issue remained deeply personal to her: advocating for youth and families in Capitol Heights.

One moment in particular stayed with her. While visiting a local park, she noticed children struggling with equipment that was not designed to be accessible for everyone. After speaking with a parent who felt their child’s needs were often overlooked in community planning, Renaijah was reminded exactly why she decided to run.

“In that moment, I wasn't just a candidate,” she shared. “I was that same Girl Scout who learned years ago that if you see a gap, you fill it.”

That interaction strengthened her commitment to fighting for inclusive parks, youth programs, and spaces where every child feels seen and supported.

And despite the election results, Renaijah has no plans of slowing down.

She is now preparing to launch a nonprofit focused on youth programming and mentorship, continuing the same mission that inspired her campaign in the first place. For her, leadership was never about a title. It was always about service.

“The title would have been a great tool,” she said, “but leadership is a lifestyle, not an office.”

Today, Renaijah hopes her story encourages other young women to stop waiting for permission to lead.

“For so long, we’ve been told to wait our turn,” she said. “But our communities need our boldness, our fresh eyes, and our hearts right now.”

Her journey reflects the heart of Beautiful As I Am: that authenticity is power, confidence creates change, and young women are capable of transforming the communities around them long before the world expects them to.

At 21 years old, Renaijah Ford did more than run for office.

She reminded an entire community what beautifully bold leadership looks like.
